Thredbo Landslide Coronial Inquest, NSW, Australia

THE PROJECT

A landslide in Thredbo Village in 1997 killed 18 people in two lodges  in the slide’s path. The worst natural disaster in Australia’s history at that time, an inquest into the deaths, and the cause of the landslide was held.

PSM was engaged as the technical advisor to the Coroner, Derrick Hand.

ENGINEERING AND TECHNICAL OPPORTUNITIES

With a very high public profile, the project required sensitivity to high levels of seasonal tourism and potential economic impact on the region. A high level of technical scrutiny was required as well as legal and jurisdictional understanding. The PSM team was also required to communicate with eight different government and private parties all with their own specific interests

APPROACH AND INNOVATION

PSM adopted a flexible, transparent and responsive approach in their analysis and review with all technical evidence intensely scrutinised and challenged in court.

OUTCOMES

The thoroughness and understanding that PSM brought to the technical investigation led to all findings being accepted by the Coroner.
