Bio

Daniel Strang is a Principal Engineering Geologist of PSM, with over 13 years’ experience working on various domestic and international mining and civil engineering projects.

Dan’s primary area of expertise is designing and managing site investigations, developing geotechnical models, slope stability analyses, providing operational support, and design advice for open pit and underground mines across all commodities.  Current projects include small hard rock operations with short mine lives, to large open pits and underground mines hosted within highly complex geological conditions.

OTHER SPECIAL INTERESTS

Dan has worked on many challenging geotechnical projects for mining and civil clients alike.  He has significant slope stability and open pit slope design experience from over 100 open pits and underground operations in varying commodities and terrains, including iron in the Pilbara region, lithium and coal in the southwest, gold in West Africa and the Goldfields of Western Australia, graphite in Tanzania, copper in the Philippines, and nickel in Vietnam.

His experience also includes numerous civil projects ranging from small scale building foundations to long corridor projects such as Transmission Gully, and Sydney Metro Southwest.

Dan has held multiple secondment roles on mine sites, and incudes covering the Geotechnical Superintendent role at Lihir Gold Mine. This onsite experience provides Dan with a good understanding of day to day geotechnical and mining challenges, and allows Dan to provide practical, achievable, and cost-efficient advice which considers implications from a mine planning perspective.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Dan graduated from the University of Canterbury with Bachelor of Science majoring in geology, and a Master of Science with first class honours in Engineering Geology.

He has continued his professional development throughout his career including authoring academic papers and presenting at various conferences and technical meetings.  Dan is an active member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM).

SKILLSET

Specialising in geological and geotechnical studies for underground and open pit mines and large civil projects, his fields of special competence include:

  • Site investigation
  • Geotechnical logging and sampling
  • Field mapping of slopes, failures, and corridor projects
  • Structural and rock mass model development
  • Slope stability analysis; limit equilibrium and kinematic analysis
  • Slope instability management, monitoring, and remediation
  • Due diligence and geotechnical mine design review
