TIM NASH

Principal Engineering Geologist

Bio

Tim Nash is a Principal Engineering Geologist at PSM, with over 15 years’ experience in his field. Tim’s primary areas of practice include terrain evaluation, remote sensing, and development of geological and geotechnical models for large infrastructure civil and mining projects from pre-feasibility to detailed design and construction.

Tim has worked on numerous road, rail, tunnel, dam, pipeline and mining projects across Australia, New Zealand and Russia. He has worked on several prominent tunnelling projects within the Sydney transport sector including Lane Cove Tunnel construction, Sydney Metro Northwest (formerly Northwest Rail Link) design and construction and M4East 1b design and construction.

In 2003, Tim completed his Master of Science in Engineering Geology at the University of Canterbury New Zealand.

OTHER SPECIAL INTERESTS

Tim is passionate about the application of geology to all aspects of civil engineering, mining and tunnelling from the smallest to the largest of projects.  He is a firm believer in the link between a good understanding of the engineering geological conditions and robust engineering outcomes.  He also subscribes to a Fookes (1997) proverb suggesting that there is yet no substitute for an informed brain and trained pair of eyes.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

For the last several years, Tim has presented lectures on geological and geotechnical models for post graduate courses part time at the UNSW School of Civil Engineering. He is an active member of the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) and the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS) and has in the past regularly contributed to and coordinated industry training courses run by AGS. Tim regularly publishes technical papers and presents at conferences in the civil and tunnelling spaces.

SKILLSET

Tim specialises in geological and geotechnical studies for large civil projects, particularly linear projects covering a wide range of geological conditions.  Field of special competence include:

  • Terrain evaluation and remote sensing
  • Geological and geotechnical models for civil and tunnelling sectors
  • Earthworks design and construction
  • Site investigations
  • Geotechnical, hydrogeological and environmental monitoring and instrumentation
  • Natural hazard assessment
